We use only the most up to date materials and techniques when treating our patients.
Repairs to Damaged Teeth
The most common reason for needing a filling is to repair a tooth damaged by decay. It’s not just tooth decay that fillings are used as a treatment for though.
They can also be used to repair a cracked or broken tooth, or one that is worn down – for example, from excessive grinding.
..
- Tooth function restored
- Natural-looking restoration – porcelain material can be adjusted to match natural tooth colour
- Same-day treatment completed
- Tooth protected from further damage or decay
- Less tooth structure removed with onlays, compared to dental crowns
- Improved cosmetic appearance of filled teeth while still being able to bite and chew as usual.
- Hard-wearing restorative solution.
- Completely safe – no mercury used
..
As a tooth decays, a cavity, which is effectively a hole, forms. If the cavity resulting from tooth decay is left unfilled, the decay spreads further and can cause significant pain and, ultimately, the loss of the tooth altogether.
By filling a tooth, the spread of decay, and any associated pain, is stopped, and the tooth can function normally again.
Benefits of White Fillings
Replacing Older Dental Fillings
Our Medellin based dental care specialists can remove older amalgam fillings and replace them with more modern composite fillings thus ensuring a better smile and a longer lasting solution.
Composite white fillings are the most popular option among our patients in Medellin, and with good reason.
..
This type of filling is created using a tooth-coloured, putty-like resin that can be moulded to fit your tooth exactly.
White fillings are hardly noticeable in your mouth, and require less drilling than traditional amalgams fillings.
Process
..
- The affected tooth will be cleaned, and any remaining decayed or damaged parts will be removed prior to the treatment
- Images of your tooth and mouth area will be taken and sent to a computer to be processed which eliminates the need for uncomfortable mouth impressions
- The white filling will be created chair side using CEREC technology while you wait
- The new dental filling, or indirect restorations such as a dental inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth, giving you a restored smile in just one dental appointment
Prevention
As dentists we believe prevention is always better than cure and will always encourage and help you to look after your teeth so you don’t develop tooth decay in the first place.
This can be achieved by regular dental checkups and tooth cleaning which will improve your overall dental hygiene.
If you do have decay and need a filling then we recommend white fillings as a good solution that is both aesthetic and functional.
The new filling is made from a very durable material and will withstand the forces in your mouth when you bite and chew over a long period of time.
Conditions that Can be Treated with White Fillings, Inlays, & Onlays
Fillings, inlays, and onlays are used to restore decayed or damaged teeth. If a filling is not enough to address the damage, the English Speaking Dentist will recommend that an inlay is used to fill out the cavity and to protect the tooth.
An onlay will be used if one or more tooth cusps are affected, but the damage can still be managed without the need for a dental crown to cover the entire tooth.
Ceramic Fillings
..
The use of ceramics for fillings is advancing rapidly and we use materials such as Emax and Zirconia at our disposal for dental fillings which combine exquisite aesthetics without compromising strength and functionality.
Modern processes of digital design and laser guided milling have greatly improved the use of ceramics as a filling material for cavities.
The process allows flawless restoration and aesthetic replacement for missing tooth tissue which is indistinguishable from the surrounding tooth.
..
Fillings can last for between 5-15 years, depending on your eating and oral hygiene habits, after which they may need replacement fillings, if they have become worn, cracked or discoloured.
Many of our patients choose to replace older amalgam fillings. You can talk to your dentist about this option as part of your overall dental hygiene program.
..
There are alternatives to dental fillings, to improve the appearance of damaged teeth. Options include veneers, crowns, implants and bridges.
We will discuss the options with you and advise on what we think is the best course of treatment based on your specific circumstances.
Whether you are just visiting or living in Medellin, Colombia we are here to assist with all of your dental requirements and you can be sure our expert dentists will look after your teeth and gums in a professional pain free manner.
